South African football team captain Meyiwa shot dead in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa football captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa shot dead in Johannesburg, police reported on Monday.

According to police, Senzo, 27, was attacked in his girlfriend’s house un Vosloorus by an unidentified man.

On Saturday, he was in action for his club, when they progressed to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup. Orlando Pirates beat Ajax Cape Town 4-1.

More than 17,000 people were murdered in South Africa between April 2013 and March 2014, an increase of about 800 over the previous year, according to police figures. – (Reuters)
