Democracy day today with theme engaging young ones to democracy

ISLAMABAD: World democracy day is being observed around the world today as political demonstration entered second month in Pakistan over demands of political reformation forĀ strengtheningĀ of democracy.

The day is observed around the world on September 15 since 2007 when United Nations approved the resolution A/ 62/ 7 unanimously.

The UN resolution stresses the member countries to make political institutions as powerful as possible and make possible for masses to participate in national policies.

All the member countries agreed that at the time of its approval that world democracy day would be observed around the world on September 15.

The theme for this yearā€™s democracy day ā€” Engaging Young People on Democracy ā€” highlights the challenges and opportunities of engaging the youth in the process.

The UN says that people between the ages of 15 and 25 constitute a fifth of the worldā€™s population. In many developing countries, the proportion is even higher, with the majority of young people living in low- and middle-income countries.

However, many studies have shown that the youth are losing faith in politics, with participation in elections, the political process and activities of social organisations declining across the world. This applies to both established and emerging democracies.

According to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the world seems to be more turbulent than ever. In many regions and in many ways, the values promoted by the UN, including some of the most fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in its charter, are being tested and challenged.

For Pakistan the day has come when youth Ā are very much charged and struggling hard to make new Pakistan for political system on the banner of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek.
