Pakistan Protection Bill 2014 approved with majority in National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan’s lower house, National Assembly, on Wednesday approved the controversial Pakistan Protection Bill 2014 with vast majority after receiving significant resistance by some political parties due to presence of various flaws.


Pakistan Protection Bill 2014, which was unanimously approved by the upper house ‘Senate’ earlier, has been approved with majority in the lower house without description and definition of terrorism.

Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid moved the bill in the National Assembly during its 13th session in Islamabad today chaired by speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

The bill increased the punishment in scheduled offences from 10 years to 20 years, whereas, any person will be given on remand period till 60 days.

Roles of armed and civilian forces are clarified in the amended bill for preventing the criminal activities in the country. According to the bill, police officer of rank 15 will be authorised to order shoot at sight but after giving  warning to the assailant.

Security agencies have been provided by firm and uncompromising authorities as compare to the past in order to stop terrorism across the country.

The bill was presented after major amendments after receiving heavy criticism by the opposition political powers actively taking part in the current government.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) played vital role in the approval of the Pakistan Protection Bill 2014 presented by the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)-led federal government.

The recently passed bill will be implemented for the next two years in the country.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) expressed concerns over the amended bill while PTI rejected to support or object the Pakistan Protection Bill 2014 via boycotting the voting.
