France held 0-0 by Ecuador but top World Cup group

RIO DE JANEIRO: France managed only a 0-0 draw with 10-man Ecuador at the Maracana stadium on Wednesday but still topped World Cup Group E to avoid a tie against Argentina in the second round.

Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez brilliantly held France’s strike force at bay even after captain Antonio Valencia was sent off early in the second half for a crude studs up challenge on Lucas Digne.

France now plays Nigeria in the last 16.
