ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) has revoked membership of Geo News Television.
According to a PBA handout issued here, a decision to this effect was taken in an emergent meeting of the association’s board of directors here on Friday.
The meeting took up the issue in view of the Defence Minister, Khwaja Asif’s statement regarding charges of treason against Jang/Geo Group.
A representative of beleaguered Jang/Geo Group was also present during the meeting.
On top of cancelling the membership of Geo News, the PBA board members also decided to slap a show-cause notice on the television channel for misconduct in accordance with the articles of association.
On June 6 Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) suspended Geo News for 15 days and fined of Rs10 million for flouting the laws.
Geo News locked horns with Pakistan’s spymaster Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) ever since a prominent anchor of the television channel was attacked in the volatile port city of Karachi in April.
Hamid Mir was shot three times but survived, with his family blaming the chief of the ISI, General Zaheer-ul-Islam, for the attempted murder.
Mir’s brother, Amir Mir, said Hamid had told him before the attack that he felt threatened and if anything happened to him the ISI chief “would be responsible”.
Geo News broadcast images of Islam along with the Mir family allegations for eight hours, following which the ministry of defence lodged a complaint with PEMRA seeking the channel’s closure
