PESHAWAR: A tribal jirga Friday called on Corps commander Lt Gen Khalid Rabbani and requested him not to start operation against militants in North Waziristan Agency.
The tribal jirga led by tribal elder Sher Mohammad appealed to the Corps Commander to delay expected the military operations against militants in North Waziristan Agency and let the jirga resolve the issue through negotiations.
They also discussed the current security situation in North Waziristan Agency and June 10 deadline by Pakistani Taliban led by Gul Bahadur, asking the tribesmen to leave the agency by the deadline, private TV channel reported.
The tribesmen assured the corps commander that they would cooperate with local administration for restoration of peace and security in the agency. They appealed to Pakistan army not to render the tribesmen homeless.
The corps commander said that the government has not yet decided about operation in North Waziristan Agency and the tribesmen should not leave their homes.
Meanwhile, the jirga also called on Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mehtab Ahmad Khan and assured the governor of complete cooperation with local political administration in restoration of peace and security in the agency.
The governor asked the tribesmen to help the government in restoration of peace and security in North Waziristan Agency.
