ISLAMABAD: The Defence Ministry of Pakistan has demanded an increase in next budget allocated for armed forces. The demand was made on the grounds that the current defence budget was not enough for military.
Additional Secretary for Defence Ministry Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Arshad Quddus on Monday briefed media about defence budget in a press conference organised by Senate Committee on Defence.
He said the amount provided in the budget last year was used for soldiers’ salaries and to cover operational and maintenance costs only.
He revealed that Pakistan’s defence budget is very low as compare to other countries in the region, particularly India.
Quddus further told that Pakistan defence spending was $ 6.27 billion last year while India spent $ 37 billion on its armed forces in 2013.
Additional Secretary Defence said that Pakistan spends $8427 on each soldier every year while India spends $24075 on its every soldier per year.
Next fiscal year’s budget will be announced in the first week of June. It is expected that the government will increase the defence budget on the basis of increased army needs.
