MIRPUR: Sri Lankan cricket team beat rivals Pakistan by 5 wicket in the final match of Asia Cup to become Asian cricket champion.
Sri Lanka won the title for the fifth time.
Sri Lankan batsman Thirimanne scored 101 runs while Jayawardene made 75 runs to chase a target of 261 by Pakistan’s cricket team.
Earlier Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first and made 260 runs for the most important match of the tournament with the top order batsman failing and youngster Fawad Alam making his maiden century.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq scored 65 runs while Umar Akmal made 59 in an exciting innings and remained not out till the end.
Sri Lankan fast bowler Malinga took 5 wickets for 56 runs.
Sri Lanka confidently started their innings with both their openers playing shots at all sides.
Pakistan’s hopes were on the rise again when their spinner Saeed Ajmal took 2 consecutive wickets on two balls sending Perera and Sangakkara back to pavilion.
Saeed Ajmal took 3 wickets for 26 runs.
Pakistan’s T20 captain Hafeez dropped two important catches.
Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga was awarded “Man of the Match” for his excellent performance with the ball.
While Thirimanne was given “Player of the series” award.
