RAWALPINDI: Pakistani police on Monday arrested 34 Afghan nationals under Section 14 of the Foreign Act during search operations in Rawalpindi, the home of the country’s powerful military.
According to UNHCR, the country still hosts over 1.61 million registered Afghan refugees, the largest and most protracted refugee population in the world.
Police spokesman said that the search operations were carried out on the special directives of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Akhtar Umar Hayat against Afghan nationals residing illegally in the city. “Police have netted 34 Afghan nationals and 12 other suspects during the last 48 hours. At least 13 motorcycles were also impounded.”
He said that around 108 hotels and 283 persons were checked during the search operation that had begun on Sunday night.
