KARACHI: Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) Sindh Chapter on Thursday has announced to stage protest on Jan 24 (tomorrow) on the varsity’s Silver Jubilee gate and one-day strike in all universities across Sindh on Feb 11 over severe concerns with provincial and federal authorities.
A meeting of FAPUASA (Pakistan) was conducted in University of Karachi. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Ehsan Sharif President FAUASA.
The federation management discussed the agenda points including proposed legislations in provincial assumption, problems and prospects with HEC, growing financial crisis in universities, SAARC-level meeting associations, FAPUASA elections 2014 and issuance of NOC in Sindh Universities.
Protest on January 24:
The federation members unanimously decided that a protest will be staged in the University of Karachi, Silver Jubilee Gate, on January 24 at 11:00 am, which is being jointly organised by the FAPUSA Sindh Chapter with Karachi University and NED University.
One-day strike in all universities across Sindh:
According to the press release, “one-day strike” will be observed on February 11 in all Universities of Sindh., wheras in all other provinces a two hours token strike will be organised to show the solidarity with the Teachers of the Universities of Sindh.
Grand General Body Meeting of FAPUSA:
The management took decision organise a “Grand General Body Meeting of FAPUSA” of all Universities Faculty in the first week of March at the campus of Peshawar University, where final decision on the fate of respective ‘Universities Amendment Act’ will be discussed.
Discussion of HEC’s role in Pakistan:
The meeting also discussed the role of HEC in Pakistan and recommended there should not be not any multi-layered system for the fund disbursement in the universities of Pakistan.
President FAPUASA said,” We reject monthly disbursement system of funds by HEC. It should be on annual basis to allow respective syndicate to act accordingly in the composition of their budgets.
We condemn unnecessary interruption of HEC, as well as government in recruitments in university at all levels.
SAARC level conference:
FAPUASA will soon organize SAARC level conference of Academic Staff Associations to condemn the commercial and reo-liberal approaches being adopted by Provincial and Federal Governments of the country.
Meeting unanimously condemned Sindh Government’s tactical delay in resolving the Issue. The Teachers’ of all universities are determined not to compromise on the autonomy of universities of Pakistan and unnecessary interruption of Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the country’s varsities.
FAPUASA demanded the strengthening of financial, administration and academic autonomy of the universities as well as the Public Sector Universities in the country.
They placed another demanded that the public sector universities should be given bail out packages and financial burden must not be shifted to students and poor parents.
