ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday has closed the special cell established to verify academic degrees of parliamentarians in Pakistan.
HEC shut down the special cell formed to scrutinise the credibility of educational degrees of Pakistani lawmakers after suspension of academic restrictions in the country’s assemblies.
It must be noted that the cell was established to verify innumerable degrees of the members of provincial and national assemblies before May 11 general election 2013.
HEC provided the closure reason of special cells following the removal of eligibility condition of being a degree holder for each lawmaker, local media reported.
The highest educational commission would now verify their degrees of the lawmakers via same procedures allocated for common citizens.
Earlier, several parliamentarians including Members of National Assembly (MPAs) and Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) faced legal consequences over HEC’s declaration of holding fake degrees.
The verification of lawmakers’ fake degrees generated a lot of controversies across the country and received severe criticism especially by the political leaders who faced legal actions of being declared ineligible for election and several got dismissal from their seats.
