ISLAMABAD: The three-member bench of Special Court has set up to hear the treason case of former President General (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf on Thursday (today).
Three-member Special Court headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising justices Syeda Tahira Safdar and Yawar Ali Khan will hear the case. The court had summoned former president today (Thursday) for indicting him in treason case. The Court will resume hearing at the National Library building.
The court in its order had said that if Musharraf would not appear then the court would issue proper orders for ensuring his presence in court.
Meanwhile, the former president Pervez Musharraf’s embattled counsel Ahmed Raza Kasuri said his client’s appearance in a special court conducting his treason trial today (Thursday) was conditional to an improvement in his health.
He said if the doctors will allow Musharraf to appear before court he will appear, adding that Musharraf did not scare from the courts.
Talking to a private TV channel Ahmad Raza Kasuri said that the doctors have not yet declared Pervez Musharraf to have completely recovered from his illness. He said that Pervez Musharraf could not take mental pressure for his current state of health and added that the doctors were likely to inform about his health by this evening.
Justifying 70-year-old Musharraf’s absence from all hearings of the case so far on medical grounds, Kasuri said: “At present, he (Musharraf) is not a normal person and I cannot say exactly if he will appear before the court because he is sick and under observation.
Ahmad Raza Kasuri said that Pervez Musharraf’s exemption from appearance in the court would be sought verbally. He further said that the former president facing security threats as well.
Meanwhile the supporters of Parvez Musharraf carried out protest demonstration outside the National Press Club and raised slogans against the government and in favour of Musharraf. The spokesman of the Parvez Musharraf, Rashid Qureshi termed the court set up for Musharraf trial as “kangaroo court”.
Last week, the court ordered Musharraf to appear before it on January 16 to face charges of high treason after reviewing a medical report from the Armed Forced Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), where he was admitted with heart problems on January 2.
The medical report did not suggest that Musharraf, in his present state of health, was unable to attend hearings, the three judges of the special court said in an order issued on January 9.
Musharraf’s camp says the treason allegations, which relate to his imposition of emergency rule in November 2007, are politically motivated, and his lawyers have challenged the authority of the tribunal.
