Islamabad High Court on Wednesday has restored Zaka Ashraf as Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board who was ordered to halt work on June, 2013 amid a row over his election, which was criticised in some quarters as unfairly influenced by the then president Asif Ali Zardari, the board’s patron.
Two member bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) comprising Justice Riaz Ahmed and Justice Noor-ul-Haq Qureshi hearing the intra-court appeal pleaded by Zaka Ashraf.
Ashraf, 60, became the first-ever elected chairman of the PCB last month under a new constitution demanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reduce political interference.
Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the IHC had declared the election of Zaka Ashraf as PCB chairman as illegal in 30-pages detailed verdict.
Justice Siddiqui observed in the written judgment that the appointment of Zaka was not as a career cricketer and he has no expertise to run the administrative affairs of the cricket board. It was said that his appointment was totally based on fraudulent since democratic ways were not adopted during his election for the appointment as chairman.
The court expressed its astonishment that how patron could bar a man from participating in the election while the said person has the capability to be elected as chairman and this thing was beyond the understanding.
Ashraf’s nomination was widely criticised by former players and officials because it was seen as politically motivated, with the cricket head coming from the same party as the president.
In the light of the court order, Asharaf would now be handed over all charges to exercise his powers as PCB chairman.
