Paris: In a first-of-its-kind case in Italy, a grieving father had his dead son eternally preserved by getting the 20-year-old’s ashes transformed into a diamond.
The unnamed 55-year-old’s 20-year-old son died in a car accident and was buried in his hometown of Treviso before his father got the “brilliant” idea.
The man’s son had been killed in car crash this year in Treviso, Italy. The process of body to diamond transformation involves refining the carbon found in the ashes after cremation and then placement of those ashes in a high-pressure chamber to replicate, in a shorter time, the same process nature takes to create a natural diamond.
The young man’s body was exhumed and cremated before being shipped to Switzerland, where his ashes were compressed into a gemstone in a high-heat, high-pressure chamber that mimics and accelerates the natural process required for carbon to transform into diamonds.
Eight months later, the deceased son was returned to his father in diamond form. As odd as it may sound, this process is not uncommon — the sparkling remains even have a name: remembrance diamonds.
The cost of the process ranges from €3,500 to €13,000 depending on the finished diamond’s dimensions, the report added.
