Islamabad: Lawyers for former military ruler Pervez Musharraf appealed to the United Nations, United States of America (US), United Kingdom (UK) and Saudi Arabia (KSA) to intervene and help prevent him being tried for treason, saying he faced a “show trial”.
Musharraf’s case, initiated by the federal government, focuses on accusations that the former military leader breached the constitution when he imposed emergency rule in 2007.
The charges mark a serious challenge to the country’s powerful army and could result in the execution of a man who was once the most powerful in the country.
Musharraf’s trial is due to begin on December 24.
The lawyers also sent a plea, issued from London by an international legal team, is designed to get the United Nations to urge Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, to delay or stop it.
Musharraf during in an interview, has already sought “forgiveness” for any wrongs he may have committed during his nine-year regime, saying he will face all cases against him and not flee the country like a coward.
“Whatever I did, I did it for the country. It could be wrong but there was no bad intention in it. Even then, if someone thinks that I have committed a mistake, I seek forgiveness,” Musharraf said in the
As insisted by his close associates earlier, Musharraf said he will not leave the country to run away from the numerous cases registered against him including a high treason case. “I don’t want to runaway cowardly and will face all the trials to makes the thing clear,” the former President said. “Let there be 100 trials,” he said.
His lawyers made the same appeal to the British, American and Saudi governments, citing what they said was Musharraf’s “immense assistance” to the West during his time in office.
The judges in charge of the case had been selected by Sharif and would not conduct a fair trial, they said.
“Politicians have no business hand-picking judges to try their opponents,” said Steven Kay, a member of Musharraf’s legal team.
