Islamabad: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has dispatched a summary to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, proposing the federal government to hold census ahead of next general elections in the country.
In the summary, the ECP asked government to hold fresh consensus by placing this matter before the Council of Common Interests (CCI)
In the summary, the ECP said that according to the Constitution the holding of census is necessary after every 10 years, but the census in the country did not take place for a long time  after the last consensus was held in 1998.
The ECP suggested that census be held before 2018 general elections in Pakistan in order to help ascertain actual count of the population and formation of electoral constituencies.
Earlier today, leader of the opposition in national assembly Khurshid Shah has written a letter in which he also demanded to hold the fresh consensus.
Five consensus had been held in Pakistan in 1951, 1961, 1972, 1981 and in 1998.
