Islamabad: Time for the result now, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday has finally taken a decision and appointed Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif as new Chief of Army Staff (COAS) while choosen Lieutenant General Rashid Mehmood for the seat of new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
Prime Minister ignored the number one contendor Lieutenant General Haroon Aslam who was working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani – Chief of Logistics Staff (CLS).
According to the Army rules, now Haroon Aslam would apply for pre-retirement.
Both senior generals met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier today where the premier conveyed them the decision. The two meetings are being viewed as of immense significance as they come a day before General Kayani’s retirement from his post of army chief.
The President Mamoon Hussain also recognized the decision made by the PM regarding the appointments.
Experts said that the meeting of the PM with Rashid Mehmood and Raheel Sharif given hint that the premier had picked both for the important positions.
Lieutenant General Rashid Mehmood was currently working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani – Chief of General Staff (CGS) while the  Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif was working as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to Gen Kayani Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IGT&E)
In 1998, he hand-picked Pervez Musharraf to head the Army and he too had superseded at least two Generals. Musharraf first plotted the Kargil misadventure derailing Sharif’s India-Pakistan peace dialogue in 1999 and then engineered a coup against the Prime Minister in the same year.
