Abu Dhabi: Nepal on Wednesday qualified for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 after beating Hong Kong by 5 wickets.
Today wins inĀ Abu Dhabi has meant that Nepal qualified for the World T20 which would be held in next year.
To limit the number of teams in the tournament proper to 10, the International Cricket Council has created a first round phase for six teams that will take place in Bangladesh from March 16 to 21.
Bangladesh and Zimbabwe automatically qualify for this round. Ireland and Afghanistan, as the top teams in the ongoing qualifiers in the United Arab Emirates,Ā qualified earlier this week.
Now Nepal will join, though with only two teams able to make it to the second round of the World T20, it is highly unlikely the country will get to play the worldās biggest teams.
āThe qualifying teams will form part of the opening round of Twenty20 cricketās crowning event,ā the ICC says.
The top eight cricket nations, known as full members of the ICC, automatically qualify for round two, which kicks off on March 21, when India will play old rival Pakistan in Mirpur. The other teams are England, Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and reigning champion the West Indies.
Hong Kong has another chance to get to Bangladesh as it plays Papua New Guinea on Thursday. The winner of that match will qualify for the opening round of the World T20. The winner of Wednesdayās other match between the U.A.E. and the Netherlands will also qualify for that phase, while the loser will take on Scotland on Wednesday for the sixth and final berth.
