You have read it correctly; exercising during pregnancy can help in developing your baby’s brain. A recent Canadian research, presented at the annual meeting of Society for Neuroscience in San Diego, supports moderate exercise routine for pregnant women.
18 expected ladies joined the research team (University of Montreal) at the beginning of their 2nd trimester. The ultimate findings suggest that even 20 minutes of exercise thrice a week is enough to boost the development of your kid’s brain. These 18 pregnant women were only asked to do easy and light exercises like walking, jogging, swimming and cycling.
The researchers measured brain development with the aid of EGG when new born babies were 8 to 12 days old. Elise Labonte Le Moyne, researcher and Ph.D. student in kinesiology, explained her method, “We used 124 soft electrodes placed on the infant’s head and waited for the child to fall asleep on his or her mother’s lap. We then measured auditory memory by means of the brain’s unconscious response to repeated and novel sounds.”
She further told about her findings, “our results show that the babies born from the mothers who were physically active have a more mature cerebral activation, suggesting that their brains developed more rapidly.”
There have been many studies in the past that suggests healthy effects of exercise during pregnancy on babies. Even some studies in animals also support the idea of enhanced progress of fetal brain. But this is first time that any study proved positive impact of exercise during pregnancy on brain of the child.
Head researcher of this project was positive that this study will encourage pregnant women to exercise. He said “most of all, we are optimistic that this will encourage women to change their health habits, given that the simple act of exercising during pregnancy could make a difference for their child’s future,”
