ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain has said peace talks with Taliban are not possible at this time as the latter are annoyed over killing of their chief Hakimullah Mehsud.
In an interview with British Broadcaster, the minister said the government was waiting for the climate to become conducive for peace talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He said it will take a few months.
Rana Tanveer said talks were not possible until the Taliban are cooled down. He said another attempt for talks could be made in 2-3 months. He said that military action would be the last option, adding that the government wants to give dialogues process a chance. Rana Tanveer Hussain said that the government will talk about holding of dialogues instead of the Taliban refusal for dialogues.
Replying a question regarding holding of dialogues with Mullha Fazlullah, Rana Tanveer said that yes Fazlullah is a hardliner but it is possible that the dialogues with him could become result-oriented this time.
He said that some groups of extremists want to hold negotiations with the government and want to enter into main stream. He said that the political and military leadership are on the same page regarding the dialogues with Taliban.
Replying to another question he said that the US backs dialogues process as it was backing the Doha talks. He said that the US has not responded at official level over the Pakistan protest on the killing of Hakimullah Mehsood.
