Karachi: Major Political Parties Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) rejected the option of military insurgence in Karachi.
In a local media channel, majority of political stakeholders voiced their opinion against the proposed military operation in the metropolitan city. However, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (Awami National Party) were in favour of having army in Karachi for the control of recent unrest in the city.
During a local TV programme ‘Jeenay Do Karachi Ko’, representatives of all political parties including the ruling party PML-N was taken on board and a debate was made as to how to normalise the situation in Karachi.
In the programme six highly critical questions were raised by the anchor Hamid Mir and the parties had to answer in either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. These comprised of:
1) Can a fair military operation be the option to cut down the peril of widespread violence in Karachi?
2) Do the representatives of religious and political parties take extortion?
3) Is the deteriorating law and order situation in the city is because of intelligence and law enforcing agencies?
4) Is it a fact that police also is recruited under political influence rather than the merit?
5) Has the rangers deployment favoured the law and order situation in Karachi?
6) Is the business community in Karachi being pressurised by religious and political parties?
The host of the show Hamid Mir was able to bring all the stakeholders of Karachi to the consensus. The political party representatives also agreed upon
- A joint targeted operation by military, police and rangers.
- An impartial team of civil society and media needs to be setup before operation is being carried out.
- Intelligence agencies must have coordination among them.
- Karachi needs to be deweaponised.
- Check and balance.
- Authentic intelligence reports before conduction of operation.
- no-go areas need to be eliminated.
The political stake holders from all parties comprised of Asad Umer (PTI), Sindh’s Information Minister Sharjeel Memon (PPP), Faisal Sabzwari (MQM), Sarwat Ijaz Qadri (PST), Abdul Hakeem Baloch (PML-N), Shahi Syed (ANP), and Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman (JI).
