Islamabad: President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari said that he is satisfied on completing his five-year tenure.
In a speech while addressing to the media during a farewell dinner, he said, “Democratic transition to power means strengthening of democracy and I’m confident that Pakistan will be the ultimate winner”. He further added, “I’ve no regrets. I’m exiting the Presidency with honour and dignity”.
On September 8th, 2013 President Zardari will complete his five year tenure and will transfer the powers to Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Mamnoon Hussain, who is next in line to hold the position for the next five years.
Zardari during his speech to the journalists has urged that his political party Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would always be prepared to help PML (N) to combat terrorism and challenges to the economy.
Despite PPP lost 11th May elections to the ruling party of Nawaz Sharif and have become opponent in the assembly, yet we are ready for our services to support the government.
“We (PPP) accepted the elections despite our reservations, but at the same time it is also our democratic right to criticise wrong decisions of the government”.
On the performance of the previous government, the outgoing president confessed that the failures have been committed by the PPP government but having stood tall for democracy is all that matters the most. At the same time, he too blamed scarce resources for his party not implementing the agenda they wanted to.
He further added, “Today even Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would acknowledge that democracy is the best revenge”, people failed to understand when I used to say, ‘we have come to create history, not to make headlines’”.
President Zardari further said that he was a strong believer of freedom of expression and it is the right of the people that can’t be denied. “We tolerated scathing criticism for the sake of democracy, others should learn from the criticism I and my party faced. Politicians are people’s representatives and people have the right to criticise them”.
The President of Pakistan said that he and his party would back the present government of PML (N). To ensure the continuation of the policies, he arranged meeting of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with Chinese PM Li Keqiang.
