Lahore: Tea imports likely to get affected because of the clash on LoC. Pakistan and India had an agreement for importing 50 million kg of tea by 2015.
The shipment of tea from India was set to start from August and would be applicable up to next year. According to chairman Indian Tea Association A.N Singh
“If the relationship between India and Pakistan deteriorates, it will impact tea exports. There is an element of uncertainty now. We have to see how things will develop over the next few weeks”.
Earlier according to Indian website, in 2012, Pakistan bought about 23.63 million kg of tea from India at $1.69 per kg. In 2011, as the website claims, Pakistan imported 25.2 million kg worth $1.42 per kg.
A leading Indian exporter Gopal Poddar claimed, “We exported teas in June and July. There was some problem till May as Pakistan lifted more teas from Kenya. The Kenyan production was up and it offered teas at a much lower price to Pakistan buyers”.
On the other hand, Chairman Tea Association of Pakistan, Muhammad Hanif Janoo said that Indian tea imports may get affected because of various reasons. He said, “Kenyan prices are very much low. So, Indian tea is not attractive this year. We have imported more from Kenya”.
