Islamabad: Pakistan observes the Minorities Day on Sunday on account of contributions by the non Muslims.
This day was first celebrated in 2009 due to the efforts of minister of minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti who was assassinated in 2011 in the capital city, Islamabad.
This day is also in remembrance of the speech by Qauid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah on 11th August 1947 which states “You may belong to any religion or caste or creed – that has nothing to do with the business of the State”. This day according to media reports is fulfillment of Qauid’s promise to the minorities.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari in separate messages have urged to promote and preserve harmony, tolerance and peace which are the hallmark for a democratic society.
The President in his message requested the public and religious leaders to preach tolerance among different religious faiths.
In a message, the Prime Minister also said that the government will continue the effort to preserve the people’s rights to faith.
Nawaz Sharif further added that we are one nation despite having diverse beliefs and work for the betterment and prosperity of Pakistan unanimously.
