KABUL: Nine permanent US army bases will remain there in Afghanistan even if US army leaves the war-torn country according to the promised deadline of 2014, Russian media revealed on Thursday.
According to the media reports,President Hamid Karzai has vowed Thursday to negotiate further as Washington wants to maintain nine military bases in Afghanistan after ISAF troops withdraw in 2014, however, sources said that these negotiations will not be about the number of bases, Rather these negotiations will be about what the country may get in return of continuing the US presence which will not be less than 2500 soldiers and this number may go up to an upper limit of 12500 also depending on the situation at that time.
Hamid Karzai himself has thrown some light on these developments yesterday as he said “Our conditions are that the US intensify its efforts in the peace process, strengthen Afghanistan’s security forces, provide concrete support for the economy – power, roads, dams – and provide assistance in governance,When they do this, we are ready to sign [a partnership agreement].”
It needs to be mentioned that previously US had announced that it will retain bases in only two cities, however, now the plans appear to have changed.
