KABUL: Sources from Afghanistan have told us that from Saturday they have started receiving reports of fierce fighting in the northern province of Faryab.
They said that details are not known but there are reports that insurgents have taken control of several villages in Qaisar district.
A spokesman for the provincial governor, Jawed Baidar, told the British media that more than 60 insurgents had been killed in the fresh incidents .
Women and children are also thought to have been among the casualties. It is worth-mentioning that Faryab province has generally had a reputation for being a peaceful part of Afghanistan in relation to rest of the country but this time Faryab seems to be the focal point of the ongoing battle between NATO and Taliban.
The commentators on Saturday reminded media that Sunday is the day of “Spring offensive” and fresh fighting may have connection to the spring offensive. According the sources, the Taliban’s leadership had earlier announced that the group’s annual “spring offensive” would begin on Sunday.
“Every possible tactic will be utilised in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors,” a statement said.
This new campaign may include suicide attacks on foreign military bases and diplomatic facilities, as well as infiltrate Afghan security forces and carry out ‘insider attacks”.
The Afghan defence ministry, however, gas dismissed the announcement saying they are “ready to neutralise the offensive”.
