ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, hearing case pertaining to giving voting right to overseas nationals, has remarked that National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) should quit if he fails to provide voting facility to Pakistani living abroad.
A three-member bench of the apex court continued the hearing of the case on Friday.
During the hearing, Pakistan Attorney General Irfan Qadir and Chairman Nadra also appeared before the court.
The CJ said GHQ team could be asked to develop an e-voting software through the Defence Secretary.
Irfan Qadir, the attorney general, presented before the bench a report saying the software of e-voting would cost $1.5 million.
NADRA chairman told the court that 4.5 million Pakistanis had been registered and issued NICOP cards.
The Chief Justice said that voter registration has already been completed and at least ten countries where a large number Pakistanis reside must have mechanisms for voting.
The Chief Justice further said polling stations should be made in embassies and consuls, adding that voters are more important than the elections as they are the real stakeholders.
Subsequently, the court adjourned the hearing till April 1.
