Islamabad: A Tactical Command and Operations Centre (TCOC) would be built at the Karachi Airport on Pakistan’s request, the US Embassy in Pakistan said in a statement.
The US embassy said that the compound was going to be built on Pakistan’s request and its main purpose would be to curb drug smuggling.
It said that the project would be run solely by the Pakistani government and the proposed building would be under use of only Pakistani officials and that no US soldier would take part in the entire project.
Earlier, Pakistan’s Secretary Defence Lt Gen (Retd) Asif Yaseen Malik on Wednesday denied the report that the US Army Corps had been permitted to build a compound at the airport in the country’s biggest city.
A special meeting of National Assembly’s standing committee on defence held under the chairmanship of Azra Afzal here in the capital on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Malik told the committee that the news regarding US building army compound at Karachi airport was false.
He said that US Army could not be allowed to build compound, adding that investigation into the publishing of a tender in newspapers is being carried out.
He said that military installation were under terror threat, adding that the security of the navy and air force’s installation had been given to the military commandos.
