Karachi: The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a government bill under which education would be free and compulsory for students aged between five and 16 years in the province on state expense.
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill 2013 was unanimously passed into the law after Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq introduced it in the assembly.
Lawmakers on the occasion termed the bill a remarkable achievement of the current provincial government.
As for private schools, Haq said 20 percent of the total students would be provided with free education.
The minister said private schools will also be bound to enrol five percent students for free education.
He said that Sindh had set the example for other provinces and advised other provincial governments to follow suit.
