London: Pakistan National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has ended Smart National Identity Cards (SNICs) project on Saturday over concerns by security agencies.
According to Pakistan High Commissioner in the United Kingdom (UK) Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Nadra officials said that SNICs project for Pakistanis living in Europe could not be continued because of security concerns.
Earlier, Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), approved the project. But now different security agencies expressed their reservations that sensitive information about the card holders could fall into wrong hands.
Nadra had to distribute SNICs to European-Pakistanis through International Identity. Nadra ended the project after consulting with legal advisers.
