London: You could reap health benefits for months by taking a vacation, a recent study suggested.
According to the study, travelling to exotic destinations not only reduces your blood pressure but also helps you bounce back from stress and sleep well.
The study claimed that the benefits from vacation lasted for at least two weeks and in some case for months.
The study, conducted by tour operator Kuoni and the UK’s largest healthcare charity Nuffield Health, compared key health markers in holidaymakers visiting Thailand, Peru or the Maldives, with people who stayed at home and continued working.
Tests showed that after returning home from vacation there was a fall in blood glucose levels, reduction in the risk of diabetes and enhancement in mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks.
The average blood pressure of holidaymakers was dropped by 6 per cent while the workers saw their blood pressure rise by 2 per cent over the same period.
The sleep quality of holidaymakers improved by 17 per cent compared to that of non-holidaymakers that deteriorated by 14 per cent.
The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress improved by 29 per cent and a fall of 71 per cent in stress resilience scores among workers.
