Gujranwala: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf has said that it is the responsibility of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to provide security to Pakistan women cricket team as Women’s Cricket World Cup is about to begin in India.
The World Cup is scheduled to begin from January 31 and the Pakistan team would arrive India on January 24.
Talking to a press conference in Pakistan’s city of Gujranwala, Ashraf said that the board had been in continuous contact with the ICC for the team’s security.
He said that sports and politics should be separated from each other so that people may not get deprived of recreational activities.
In reply to a question about Umar Akmal being dropped from the Pakistan’s Test squad in the upcoming series against South Africa, Ashraf said that Akmal was benched as he had been out of form for quite a while now.
Earlier in the week, he suggested that the tournament be shifted to South Africa.
“Women’s World Cup is an ICC event and if the security is not good enough in India, then the world governing body should consider shifting it to a neutral venue like South Africa or somewhere,” Ashraf told a private news channel.
“I would want to leave it on ICC to decide. The entire tournament has to go to a neutral venue and a few matches cannot be shifted to another country and rest play somewhere else.
“It has to be in a peaceful manner. If it happens in India then there should be proper security arrangement, otherwise it could be shifted to a neutral venue.”
