Karachi: At least 14 more children died of measles in Sindh on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 146 in last 16 days.
According to The News Tribe Urdu, five children died of measles in Shikarpur and three in Kandhkot area. Moreover, six more children succumbed to the deadly epidemic disease in Thal, Sukkur, Arora, Saleh Pat and Arorai.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), in its annual report, has said that 210 children died of measles in Pakistan in 2012. The organisation says that Sukkur division is the highly affected area of the country as 33 children died due to disease in the division last year.
“15 children succumbed to measles in Karachi in last year,” the report said and added that around 13,973 cases of measles reported in Sindh.
The WHO further said that 1.3 million injections had been provided to the Sindh government to deal with the measles, adding that an emergency campaign had also been started in the province which will remain continue till January 9.
“2.9 million children will be provided vaccination.”
