London: Britain is now a global leader in the field of mobile web as its residents have become a gadget-obsessed nation who consumes more data on their phones or tablets than any other country, according to Ofcom report.
The British using Facebook, Twitter, watching Gangnam style clips on YouTube and using online music services consume 424 megabytes of data each month which is a 60% hike from last year. This is even more than the US. Japan uses 392 megabytes per month became second and the U.S using 319 megabytes of data came on third spot, The Guardian reports.
Media regulator Ofcom found that U.K. Internet users spend 728 minutes a week online on average which is a slight drop from last year’s average of 746 minutes.
The increase in data usage was due to accessing television via Internet in high quantities from U.K. users, according to the report from Ofcom.
The Financial Times (FT) reported that the U.K. had highest levels of access to smart phones in the world at 58% of the population, while just fewer than one in five owns a tablet computer.
There was recent criticism of the U.K. stalling in rolling out 4G mobile networks, which are better equipped to deal with the heavy data usage of the country’s residents, FT added.
