Wellington: New Zealand Cricket Board announced on Friday the new captain for national cricket team, appointing flamboyant wicket keeper batsman Brendon McCullum as the new Kiwi skipper.
McCullum was appointed as team’s captain in all three formats replacing Ross Taylor as he declined an offer to stay as a Test captain in a split-captaincy scenario.
Taylor is will also be unavailable for the upcoming tour of South Africa, although the team management is hopeful to get him back in the side for the home series against England early next year.
This was announced at a press conference in Auckland on Friday morning addressed by New Zealand Cricket CEO David White.
“Brendon certainly reads the one-day game well and is very adaptable and changes quickly,” NZ Coach Mike Hesson said. “The one-day game and the T20 game move very quickly. I think Brendon McCullum has attributes to really add value to our team in that area.”
McCullum has previously led New Zealand in eight ODIs and 12 Twenty20s. He will be the 28th Test captain of New Zealand when the series against South Africa begins on January 2 in Cape Town.
