Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has stayed current price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and sought a new formula of prices from the concerned authorities on December 5.
The verdict of the case, heard by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, asked all the stakeholders to mull upon the issue till the aforementioned date and come up with a decision on the subject.
The CJP also said that the new mechanism should be workable and acceptable and must protect interest of the consumers. He made it clear that the SC is not the institution to fix prices.
He issued the verdict after elaborate discussion on the issue in the case against increase in the CNG price.
The CJP observed that there seems to be on respite in the prices of gas while the absence of a price checklist at the CNG stations adds to the misery of people.
He inquired how the price is fixed, on which he was informed that according to 13 May 1992 SRO, the right to adjust prices was given to Ogra.
Justice Iftikhar questioned that if there’s no mechanism in place then why the price would be increased. He furthered that ‘money should not be taken out from the pockets of commoners’.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Gulzar said that ‘operative cost’ is beyond comprehension.
Law expert, Sultan Akram Raja Advocate was also present on the occasion and helped the court in the legal aspects of the matter. He told the court that there has been increase in the number of CNG stations, especially in the residential areas, which is dangerous.
