Malaysia: Australia defeated Pakistan by scoring a goal in extra time to subdue it and took third spot in the 2nd Sultan of Johor Cup on Sunday.
Australians had control of the match for most part of the first half as Cassey Hammond found himself in the centre of the semi circle with just the goalkeeper Mahzar Abbas to beat. He duly tucked the ball away for the opening goal.
Two minutes later, the Australians took a firm grip on the match when skipper Dylan Wotherspoon ran into the semi circle from the left and beat Mahzar with an angled shot.
Pakistan’s best chance came in the 23rd minute when they earned their first penalty corner of the match but it was poorly executed and failed to find the net.
In the second half, Pakistanis had more numbers in attack. Mohamed Irfan managed to pull a goal back for the Pakistanis in the 49th minute and this gave them the confidence to take the game to the Australians.
With four minutes to go, the Pakistanis equalized as Rizwan Ali scored the goal in the 66th minute and took the match into extra time. Jayshaan Randhawa scored with two minutes remaining in the first half of the extra time to give Australia the third spot.
It was heartbreak for Pakistan who came back from a 2-0 deficit and lost by 3-2.
Malaysia finished at last place of the 2nd edition of the Sultan Johor Cup when they lost the 5th placing match by 2-1 to New Zealand via a golden goal at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium.
Malaysia have only themselves to blame as they dominated the match but failed to make full use of the nine penalty corners in the match, only converting one.
