Lahore: More than 50 Ulema and religious scholars belonging to Sunni Ittehad Council (SIT), a conglomerate of religious parties of Barelvi school of thought , issued a fatwa (religious decree), dubbing Taliban’s attack on child education campaigner Malala Yousufzai un-Islamic.
The Fatwa noted “Islam didn’t bars women from getting education and that Taliban’s perception of Islam is based on unawareness and error”.
The Fatwa said “Islam terms sanctity of a believer is greater than the sanctity of the Ka’aba”
The Fatwa comes a few hours after MQM chief Altaf Hussain urged Ulema to condemn the attack on Malala within 24 hours otherwise he would be compelled to expose them.
The Barelvi school of thought has less or no influence on the Taliban militants as most of the militants follow other hardline Sunni sects.
