Washington: During the first presidential debate between the US incumbent President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Twitter saw 10.3 million tweets, making a new political record in the website’s history.
Social media analysis firm Crimson Hexagon examined over 12.9 million opinions for Mashable, analysing what the Twitter users were discussing.
According to the analysis, around 50 percent of the opinions were about the performances of the candidates, and the other half were general comments about the debate itself.
Nearly 26% of tweets criticised Barack Obama for “looking rusty,” while 16% supported him.
On the other hand, 22% said that Mitt Romney was “on his game,” while 12% disagreed with him.
The moderator of the debate, Jim Lehrer, was censured by many Twitter users for his failure to keep the candidates under control — 11% of debate tweets were critical of Lehrer’s performance.
Fourteen percent of tweets were a joke about some aspect of the debate.
