Colombo: Sri Lanka on Monday defeated England by 19 runs in an important match of super eight round played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, Sri Lanka.
SriLanka and West Indies have qualified for the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup 2012 from Group 1. Pakistan will play Australia while India will play South Africa to decide the qualifiers from Group 2.
The English team failed to chase a huge target of 170 runs and ended their inning at 150 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Samit Patel 67 and Graeme Swann 34 were the only two batsmen who replied well to the extraordinary bowling from Sri Lankan bowlers. The other English batsmen failed to cross 20’s.
The Sri Lankan bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, giving no chance to their opponents. Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers from Sri Lankan side, taking a haul of five wickets. Perera who took two wickets along with Mendis and Kulasekara who shared one wicket each also helped their team in restricting the English batsmen.
Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene 42, Mathews 28 and Perera 26 helped Sri Lanka to pile up a huge target of 170 runs for the loss of six wickets.
Broad was the most successful bowler from England side, taking three wickets for his team followed by Swann 2 and Finn 1.
