Lahore, DuPont Pioneer, a leading company researching in plant genetics and supplying high quality seeds, has awarded two scholarship grants to students studying in Forman Christian College’s MPhil Biotechnology program.
The grants were awarded to Maria Maqsood and Muhammad Adeel, both graduates of FCC’s BSc (Hons) Biotechnology program, as a part of the collaboration between FCC and DuPont Pioneer.
Present at the awards ceremony were Rector FCC Dr James Tebbe, President DuPont Pioneer Mr Paul Shikler, Director DuPont Pioneer Asia Pacific Mr Arun Baral, and DuPont Pioneer Country Business Manager Mr Asif A slishah. A number of faculty members and students from the Department of Biological Sciences were also present, including the Department Chairperson Dr Wajahat Hussain and Dr Rehan Siddiqi, Professor Emeritus. The scholarship awards were made possible as a result of the solicitation of Dr Kauser Abdulla Malik, Porfessor of Biotechnology and Coordinator of the MPhil Biotechnology program.
Dr Kauser Malik said industry must progress to move forward. He gave an outline of the research conducted by the Biotech students which related to agriculture and more specifically food security. He said FCC had both the capability and the set-up to conduct such research and collaboration with Pioneer and other companies would benefit all, with the sharing of research knowledge.
Mr Shikler thanked FCC for hosting the gathering and said that the increasing population contains several challenges for food producers who have fewer resources at their disposal. He said biotechnology offers the possibility of increased production to farmers as well as increased nutritional value in crops, and collaborations were needed to solve food shortage problems.
Dr Tebbe expressed his appreciation at the awarding of the Dupont-Pioneer scholarship grants and his pleasure with the partnership between FCC and DuPont Pioneer. He also said he had high hopes that the grant recipients would make good use of their studies and help meet the challenges of the future.
