Islamabad: Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Technology Monday blocked Google‘s YouTube, a video sharing website, for not removing trailers of Sam Bacile’s Innocence of Muslims’, a film insulting Islam and Prophet.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had directed the IT Ministry to block Youtube over the video sharing website’s failure to remove the anti-Islam film. The block will remain in place until the anti-Islam film is removed.
“Blasphemous content will not be tolerated at any cost,” PM Ashraf said.
Earlier, Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered authorities to block 700 YouTube video links of the anti-Islam movie which criticised Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
The apex court earlier had asked the state-owned Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block links to the movie which triggered anti-US agitation across the world.
Sources told UK-based bilingual news website’s correspondent that YouTube earlier had refused to accept PTA’s demand of removing objectionable video links as Pakistan government does not have such agreement with YouTube.
Meanwhile, YouTube still accessible in Pakistan through different proxy sites.
