Townsville: Australia beat South Africa by four wickets in the first semi-final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, Australia.
Australia’s skipper’s decision to field was vindicated early when right-arm fast bowler Mark Steketee and Joel Paris combined to leave South Africa at 4 for 2.
Theunis de Bruyn (16) was the third wicket to fall, caught behind by Gurinder Sandhu.
Captain Chad Bowes (46) and Murray Coetzee (50) helped South Africa to give the opponents a reasonable target of 192, also thanks to Prenelan Subrayen’s late unbeaten 30 runs.
Steketee (3 for 35) and Sandhu (2 for 23) proved to be the most successful bowlers for the hosts.
Australia’s top order collapsed while chasing the target. But Bancroft and Kurtis Patterson steadied the innings with a 95-run partnership.
An unfortunate Patterson caught behind off Williams on 49, but Bancroft found support from Bosisto and the pair added 75 to the total.
In the final, Australia will play India or New Zealand, who are going to face each other in the second semi-final on Thursday.
