Jeddah: The extraordinary meeting of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called by Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz, commenced in the holy place of Mecca, here on Tuesday.
Muslims leaders on Tuesday arrived in Mecca, the birthplace of Islam, for a summit of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that will likely see the suspension of Syria’s membership, in an action that is strongly opposed by its ally Iran.
The OIC represents 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide and that it is holding a meeting Tuesday night in Mecca, the holiest Islamic city, is of particular significance –the 26th of the holy month of Ramadan is the night when the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed, according to Muslim tradition.
The issue of Syrian President Bashar-al-Assad suppressing popular uprising and killings of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar would top among the issues to be discussed in the meeting.
President Asif Ali Zardari represented Pakistan in the summit. Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Naeem Khan were also present at the meeting.
