London: Saudi judo athlete, whose participation in the Olympics was doubtful due to the “hijab” issue, gets a green signal from authorities.
Saudi Olympic Committee, International Judo Federation and the International Olympic Committee had an agreement on the issue and they allowed Wodjan Shaherkani to wear a hijab during the competition of +78kg judo category on Friday.
But the committees have decided upon a special design of a hijab for Shaherkani and she has to wear that while fighting. Shaherkani has no idea how her specially designed hijab looks like.
Wojdan Shaherkani is one of the two women athletes to join the London Olympics 2012 from Saudi Arabia. She and other girl Sarah Attar have signed agreements to compete only in a attire that sticks to Islamic dress code.
Earlier the president of International Judo Federation Marius Vizer has said that Shaherkani would have to fight without a headscarf to comply with the principle and spirit of judo.
