New Delhi: Technical snag hit the Northern Grid for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, leading to power cuts in the national capital. Reports said several areas in Delhi suffered blackout.
More than 700 million people in India have been left without power in the world’s worst modern blackout, prompting fears that protests and even riots could follow if the country’s electricity supply continues to fail to meet growing demands.
The blackout has trapped miners, stranded train travellers and plunged hospitals into darkness when grids collapsed for the second time in two days.
Stretching from Assam, near China, to the Himalayas and the northwestern deserts of Rajasthan, the outage covered states where half of India’s 1.2 billion people live and embarrassed the government, which has failed to build up enough power capacity to meet soaring demand.
On Monday, seven states in the northern region saw power trip off at 2.32 am due to a major breakdown in the Northern Grid – an interconnected transmission network that delivers electricity from various power generating stations to distribution utilities.
The power failure had hit rail, Metro and road-traffic operations, as well as services at hospitals and civic bodies.
Apart from the national capital Delhi, supplies were badly affected in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir.
