London: Saudi judo athlete will not compete in the +78kg judo category on Friday if she is not allowed to wear the hijab.
Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani is one of the two athletes to join the London Olympics 2012 from Saudi Arabia.
Saudia Arabia is very clear about the Islamic dress code of women athletes participating in the Olympics.
But so is International Judo Federation (IJF), as president of IJF Marius Vizer has said that Shaherkani would have to fight without a headscarf to comply with the principle and spirit of judo.
Al-Watan, Saudi Arabia’s newspaper, has quoted Shaherkani’s father saying that she will not compete in the competition without hijab and he has still not received any message from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the matter.
But IJF is busy in sorting out the problem with the Saudi authorities and IOC. According to IJF, the hijab is banned in the judo due to security reasons as it may harm the player.
