London: The first event of the Olympics will kick off today when Great Britain women’s football team to take on New Zealand.
Kick-off is at 4pm at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, two days before Friday’s opening ceremony.
Team GB women’s football captain Casey Stoney said: “It’s fantastic that we’re opening the Games. It is going to hopefully raise the profile of women’s football.”
Stoney added: “It’s a global thing, it’s not just for our nation, it’s worldwide.”
“So hopefully if we can put on a good show… many, many young girls watching will go out and pick up a ball and start playing football.”
Five other women’s football matches also take place today in which United States to take on France, Japan to clash Canada, Cameroon to face Brazil while Colombia will meet DPR Korea.
