Lahore: The LUMS board of trustees decided to establish a separate School of Law within the next three years, and its structure and premises will be developed within the given period.
In a major announcement at the 24th Annual Convocation of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Rector Abdul Razak Dawood announced far-reaching changes in the LUMS landscape.
He said that LUMS was now committed to creating a standalone School of Law within this period. During this time the current Department of Law and Policy will continue to operate as part of the Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The existing Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) will be joined by two newly named Schools – the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering and the Mushtaq Ahmed Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences – and within the next three years an independent School of Law.
LUMS Rector Abdul Razak Dawood called these changes “momentous” and in his remarks paid great tribute to the vision and leadership of Syed Babar Ali and to the generosity and humility of the Gurmani family.
The LUMS Vice Chancellor, Dr. Adil Najam, agreed that these are “historic developments” and said that “these steps signify the growing maturity of LUMS as a full fledged University.” Dr. Najam said “having three named Schools, and a fourth one soon, signifies the trust that this society has in LUMS, not only as the institution exists today but in the future of the University. We are proud to have earned the trust of the Suleman Dawood family, the Syed Babar Ali family, and the Mushtaq Gurmani family and we will always work hard to be worthy of this trust.”
The School of Science and Engineering, now in its fourth year and having just graduated its first full class of undergraduates, is being named as the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering to honour the vision, dedication and philanthropy of LUMS Pro Chancellor Syed Babar Ali. The naming of the School celebrates the contributions of Syed Babar Ali as founder of LUMS, its Pro Chancellor and as a moving spirit behind educational innovation, and especially to the School of Engineering which could not have been realised without his singular dedication and efforts. Syed Babar Ali is also the single largest donor to LUMS over the last 26 years.
The School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law is being named as Mushtaq Ahmed Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences to honour the contributions and generosity of Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Gurmani and the Gurmani Foundation to education in Pakistan and to LUMS in particular. Mr. Gurmani was an agricultural reformer, philanthropist, Prime Minister of Bahawalpur State, and the first Governor of then West Pakistan. The Gurmani Foundation, set up by him, had earlier endowed the Gurmani Centre for Language and Literature at LUMS and recently gave LUMS the largest private single gift ever given to any higher educational institution in Pakistan: a PKR 1 Billion Endowment to assist deserving students with financial assistance and other scholarly activities.
