Oklahoma City: Three crew members were reported missing after two freight trains collided in Oklahoma on Sunday, a Union Pacific Railroad official said.
As firefighters rushed to the scene and tried to control the blaze, a major highway was closed near Goodwell, in the Oklahoma panhandle, Reuters reported.
That fire has engulfed three locomotives, according to Raquel Espinoza, spokeswoman for Union Pacific Railroad.
Three of the four crew members of the two trains were missing, Espinoza said. The company has been speaking with a fourth crew member, who appears to be well, she said.
Police in the panhandle city of Guymon said in a statement on the department’s Facebook site: “Train accident east of Goodwell on Hwy 54 has potential for explosion, is not stable.”
The westbound train was carrying 80 rail cars worth of finished cars, Espinoza said. The eastbound train was carrying container boxes. One of the containers, not on fire, held resin solution, and water was being poured on that container as a precautionary measure, Espinoza said.
